Journaling as Spiritual Discipline:
Being Real with Jesus

You share and I learn. My humble, heartfelt thanks...
A note from wise Judy in Texas...

I spend time journaling as part of my weekly Sabbath time alone with Jesus, and one way I connect to Him and to myself is to journal in the following way which Ruth Haley Barton suggests in her book, Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership.

So . . . I write in my journal under the following headings:

  • celebrate my joys
  • grieve my losses/disappointments
  • feel my anger/frustrations
  • attend to my loneliness
  • sit with my questions
  • confess my sins/shortcomings

The point is to (1) refrain from going into problem-solving, fix-it mode.

(2) Instead bring to Jesus what is real in my life right now and then (3) rest in Him even though I may not, or perhaps, especially because I don't have answers or resolutions to the thoughts I write in my journal.

My goal is to just be real with Jesus and know that if He needs to change something (including me), He will do it as life moves on from that place.

There is something about this that brings peace to the deepest part of me." ~ thoughtful Judy in TX

The 'right' way to journal is that which brings you into deeper communion with God. Your words meeting The Word. I hope you and He and some ink get away for some time together today.

The Plan

In the experiences of a simple/crazy life,
farming Canadian dirt, raising
half a dozen exuberant kids,
stringing sheets out on the line....

I'm praying to slow and see
the sacred in the chaos,
the Cross in the clothespin,
the flame in the bush.

Just a bit of
listening, laundry, liturgy...
life.
