We Could

She wades into wheat and I watch her go, her parting gold. Bowed heads rustle, whisper summer as she passes, skirt trailing behind.

The grasshoppers light. Her hair waves, honeyed wheat. I notice that, watch after that. August drones.

She stops, mid-field.

By the lone maple, island green, she stops just there in the middle, and I think it’s a monarch, glory flash, or cricket stilled so she’s stilled too, or a bouquet of wild daisies, and I wait to see, for her to turn.

She doesn’t.

She raises her hands in the middle of a wheat field.

“Hope?” I call across field. A moth dances, paper wings. She doesn’t turn. “Are you good, Hope?”

“I’m good.”

I wait…. She lifts hands higher.

“Just thinking of God.”

Ah.

Standing on edge of the world, watching her with heaven hands, I raise mine.

The wheat murmurs glory and I hear it.

We could live this way.

we could… raised-hand-living… glory, glory, glory… endless gifts # 1111-1124
