Weather Report: October’s Burnt Offerings

So October comes, there on the calendar but mostly in the trees, light in the sky, copper up from the ground, the roots, the limbs, now on the wind, and son brings in the mask summer now wears, the bronze and the burnished.

He offers it like a gift.

A gift of the fallen and sacrificed, the crumpled and discarded, slow fire smoldering in his hands.

These things could light us if we let them.

To be the beauty of an altar flaming.

“See them all, Mom?” Son’s kindled, those eyes. I’ve prayed for the seeing eyes and He gives me a child.

Ordinary time ignites and the air sparks, embers flying down all the lanes, landing at our feet, in the palm of our hands.

I could be a burnt offering.

The dying can be beautiful.

He sends October to remind.

You will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit
with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings.

~Ps. 51:19
