Granny's Tea Biscuits

You asked for Granny's recipe? I too have asked her over the years, and each one seems slightly different -- her artistic prerogative to improvise --- but this is the recipe Levi, Hope and her whipped up in the kitchen this week. And they ate it with smiles.

I
ngredients:

3 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup raisins
4 tbsp butter

1 egg
1 cup milk

Granny --she's 88 now, still living on her own, and flying about the country-- says:

The secret to fluffy biscuits is in the blending -- blend the butter into dry ingredients so that the mixture is to a small pea size. Then add egg/milk and blend lightly, just enough to moisten.

D
irections

1.Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a baking sheet.

2.Combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut butter in until mixture has a fine crumb texture. Add raisins.

3. Beat 1 egg in 1 cup of milk. Stir in milk with a fork to make a soft dough. Knead a few times.

4. Roll out on floured surfact to a thickness of at least 1/2 inch to 1 inch.

5. Cut into rounds with a cookie cutter or glass.

6. Place on cookie sheet, and bake for 18 to 20 minutes.

Serve warm.... and Levi says with honey and a sweet story or joke.. or two.

The Plan

In the experiences of a simple/crazy life,
farming Canadian dirt, raising
half a dozen exuberant kids,
stringing sheets out on the line....

I'm praying to slow and see
the sacred in the chaos,
the Cross in the clothespin,
the flame in the bush.

Just a bit of
listening, laundry, liturgy...
life.
