Hosanna on a Monday: on the road to Calvary

Hosanna, they sing hosanna.

And the voices wave joy that we are the saved ones, the rescued and saved ones and who cannot wonder at the wonder of this?

We sing it, a congregation, the rain falling gentle grace on the pond beside the chapel.

I watch from the window, praise falling from me too.

Salvation has come to the flailing begging help and “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” and I who know mire and tears, the sucking vortex of sin all mine, I’ve been wrenched free and who can still despair and He comes in the simple and daily and the robin sings full volume cheer. The pussy willows whisper hushed awe.

The donkey carried her swollen frame into the house of bread, to birth The Bread our souls were starved for, and again, a donkey carried His willing body triumphant into the house of God, to bleed the perfect Lamb that all our sin stain ached for. The backs of the humble carry God.

Cupped and held by fiercest tender grace, I never get over it, the new life cracking open even here.

Anyone who serves knows it, that the call sometimes crushes. I forget wine comes in the compressing. And when I walk to the front of the chapel to take the cup in hand, it comes again, full, the drops that fell in the Garden, the drops that trickled down at Calvary, and I drink again of the drops that flow from His vein, the sweetest red of the vine, and He abides in me and I in Him and I pray to bear fruit for the vine.

Oh, from earthly beginning to end, to follow His way around and for the thousand tongues to sing praises to the Alpha and Omega who will yet one day come again. And so we sent them in the post and the song sings on.

Our God, the servant King, He calls us now to follow Him and He rides ahead triumphant and we follow Him this week on the road to the Calvary and when they drive the nail, we’ll feel the spike, and when the tomb is damp empty, we’ll run lung breathless, and this is the week we walk the song from Hosanna to Hallelujah!
