Where Place and Time and God Really Meet

T
he hungry never stop seeking the point where place and time and God meet.

And in a handful of days, I drive twenty hours with four kids and one grandma and a finger traces the lines on a map that cross country borders and state lines and interstates and I find exactly where all three always intersect, place and time and God:

In this moment.

I keep the eyes wide open.

Kids squabble loud in the back seat and I take the wrong turn and The Farmer calls late to see if we made it and our eldest, he asks on Saturday night if I’d be his partner in the square dance and I smile weakly and ache at him so tall, his eyes pleading for my yes, and we stumble laugh about the floor and I love him wild, and when my mama asks the oldest son for the one real dance of the night, the last, a slow waltz, and it’s his very first real dance and it is with his Gram and she teaches him how to count, how to move the feet in time — I swallow hard, the lump and ache in the throat burning.

And I drive quiet back roads home and I keep counting, moving the heart in time to this holy moment.
