ove that acts, that doesn’t shrink back, that sacrifices and stretches itself right out, fingertips reaching, this is the link that form the chain that pulls the poor from the bondage of poverty.
Six farm kids are links in the love chain this morning.
“I don’t want you to go, Mama….” Shalom had run to the door sobbing, her nightie flying, found me amidst the luggage at the backdoor, threw herself around my waist. Hope slipped out of the dark too, the tears all streaming, shoulders shuddering.
And I had slipped an arm around my girls, drew them close, our heads all together and I had whispered into the silk of their hair, “Oh girls…. Look… ” My trembling chin looked for words.
I draw up their crumpled grief, eyes to find theirs, to strengthen their hearts — all of ours.
“This is it! Today we get to really do it, daughters! We all get to Do what we Say we believe. We get to be the Real Radical for Jesus!”
I wipe Shalom’s wet cheek, her delicate tears like dabbing of perfume. Hope takes a deep breath, all wrung out, and we brave smile.
“Just one little Guatemalan child, girls. We are doing this so that even one Guatemalan child is freed from poverty! Don’t they deserve to know Jesus too — to have a chance?!”
My two daughters nod brave and their Mama does too.
I tap the keys here in the awakening dawn in Toronto, bound for Guatemala via Chicago and Dallas, the plane taxied up to the gate, but I don’t go alone.
I go with the God-Man who broke my chains of sin with the sacrifice of Self and I go with the six kids and a Farmer Man who are willing to be a link and throw a line of Hope to the slums of Guatemala … and I go with you, the Love-Body, each of you a link in the chain that hauls whole families out of the mire of poverty and frees the world from wealth and greed and self and the ugly disease of despair.
The flight’s boarding now.
I fly.
